Efficient Network Consultants participated in the Global Commodities Forum 2024, organised by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Our involvement reflected a long-standing commitment to the questions that arise where commodities and development meet.
The forum focused in particular on the growing demand for critical minerals tied to the energy transition. This shift gives resource-rich countries a renewed opportunity to convert their endowments into prosperity and durable, broad-based development.
Critical minerals and the energy transition
Demand for the critical minerals required by the energy transition is expected to triple by 2030 and quadruple by 2040. For producing nations, that trajectory opens a window to build prosperity and lay the foundations for sustainable development.
The case for equitable value chains
Efficient Network stressed the importance of equitable value chains. The benefits of mining extraction should not be limited to fiscal revenue alone; the wider social and environmental returns owed to affected communities and ecosystems must be promoted just as deliberately.

Realising that promise calls for governance that aligns the interests of states, investors and local populations, so that the surge in mineral demand becomes a lever for shared and lasting development rather than a missed opportunity.
